THE BACKGROUND According to the forecasts of the Vietnamese administration, the existing airport of Tan Son Nhat situated in Ho Chi Minh would reach capacity by 2015, following high traffic growth observed. The busiest airport of the country handled 13 million passengers in 2009.

THE PROJECT

ADPI has served as a consultant with JAC (Japan Airports Consultants) for the master planning study of Long Thanh International Airport. The existing airport of Tan Son Nhat will be replaced by the new greenfield airport boasting a capacity of 25 Mpax at the opening stage, which is due in 2020. Construction will commence in 2018 for a total investment of USD 6 billion.

ADPI has presented the final version of the Master Plan and architecture project in November 2010. The project approval by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung would be official before the end of 2010. Following this study stage, the next step would refine the economic and financial aspects of the project. Those refinements would be studied in the Feasibility Study scheduled in 2011.

This project should reflect the national ambition of placing Vietnam among the leaders of air transport in South East Asia.
